Repertorio Español will honor Marco Antonio Rodríguez, the winning playwright of the 2012 ‘METLIFE NUESTRAS VOCES’ NATIONAL PLAYWRITING COMPETITION, at an award ceremony on Monday, May 20th, 2013 at 7pm.
In attendance will be dozens of Latino playwrights, directors, actors, designers, translators and judges that have formed part of the competition since its beginning thirteen years ago. The competition is made possible thanks to the support of MetLife Foundation.
Repertorio’s Executive Director, Robert Federico will conduct the award ceremony. Dominican-American playwright, Marco Antonio Rodríguez will receive a $3,000 cash award as the author of this year’s winning play titled BARCELÓ CON HIELO (Barceló on the Rocks). The play will receive a full production at Repertorio during the 2013-2014 season.
The evening will also include the World Premiere of “21,” the competition’s 2011 winning play. Performed in English and Spanish (with Spanish subtitles). The performance will be followed with a reception. It will all take place at Repertorio Español, 138 East 27th Street in Manhattan, New York.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
Now on its 14th edition, ‘MetLife Nuestras Voces’ has brought awareness to dozens of Latino plays and playwrights throughout the nation. The competition is responsible for the production of 13 plays at Repertorio Español. In addition, many of the competition’s finalists have gone on to receive readings, workshops and full productions at theaters such as Second Stage and Rattlestick in New York, Teatro Vista in Chicago and Signature Theatre in Virginia. Playwrights that have participated in the competition have won ACE and HOLA Awards (Lina Gallegos, Carlos Lacámara, and Jorge González) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (Quiara Alegría Hudes). The competition has distributed $100,000 in cash awards to Latino playwrights.
The competition was established in 2000 by MetLife Foundation and Repertorio Español to discover extraordinary Latino plays and bring them to the attention of the American theater community as well as provide the opportunity to the general public to witness these works.

The play tells the story of Nino, a Dominican from el Cibao living in New York City. In the course of one night he must confront his own mortality and the dark secrets that are intrinsically tied to the island’s political history and have plagued his family for generations.

ABOUT MARCO ANTONIO RODRÍGUEZ:
Marco Antonio Rodríguez is a Dominican-American playwright, actor, director and producer born and raised in New York City. Mr. Rodríguez graduated from the Fiorello H. La Guardia High School of Performing Arts and holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University. His plays include “Pico de gallo”; “Dios nos libre” (Heaven Forbid(s)!,), which was named Outstanding New Play by The Texas Theater Critics Forum; and “La luz de un cigarillo” (Ashes of Light,) which received 5 HOLA and 4 ACE Awards, including Best Play and Best Direction, during its extended run at LATEA Theater and Lehman Stages in New York. “La luz de un cigarrillo” was recently published by NoPassport Press in Spanish and English. His screenplays “Silencio” (Silence,) “Mariscal” (Marshall,) and “Kennedy in a Box” all won 1st Place in NYC’s Midnight Screenplay Competitions in separate years. In addition, “Silencio” (Silence) won Best Dramatic Short at the Action On Film Festival in Pasadena, CA and was an official selection at the SoCal Film Festival in Huntington Beach, CA and a finalist in the prestigious Creative World Awards. “Mariscal” was also a finalist in the Slamdance Writing Competition. Mr. Rodríguez’s directing credits include the South West premiere of Rick Najera’s “Latinologues” at the Undermain Theatre and the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas; “Pico de gallo” at the Ice House Cultural Center (IHCC) in Dallas; “La luz de un cigarrillo” at Teatro LATEA in New York, and “Dios nos libre” at IHCC and at the New Jazz Space Theater in New York as part of the (International Fringe Festival). Mr. Rodriguez is the recipient of the distinguished Cultural Arts & Entertainment Award given by The New York State Hispanic Court Officer's Society. He resides in both New York and Dallas, Texas and is a columnist for Latino Leaders Magazine, a national publication.

Repertorio Español premiará al dramaturgo dominicano-americano Marco Antonio Rodríguez, ganador del CONCURSO NACIONAL DE OBRAS TEATRALES ‘METLIFE NUESTRAS VOCES’ 2012, en una ceremonia el lunes 20 de mayo del 2013 a las 7pm.
A la misma asistirán dramaturgos, directores, actores, diseñadores teatrales, traductores y jueces que se han beneficiado y participado en el concurso. El mismo se fundó hace trece años gracias al apoyo de MetLife Foundation.
Robert Federico, Director Ejecutivo de Repertorio Español, tendrá a cargo la presentación del premio. Rodríguez recibirá un premio de $3,000 dólares. Su obra titulada BARCELÓ CON HIELO recibirá una producción en Repertorio Español durante la temporada 2014.
La ceremonia coincide con el estreno de la obra “21” de Vincent Toro, que ganó el Concurso en el año 2011. Presentada en inglés y español con subtítulos en español. La función será justo después de la ceremonia de premiación. La velada concluirá con una recepción luego de la función. El evento tendrá lugar en Repertorio Español localizado en el 138 Este de la Calle 27 en Manhattan, Nueva York.

Ya en su 14ta edición, el Concurso Nacional ‘MetLife Nuestras Voces’ le ha brindado exposición a una variedad de obras escritas por dramaturgos latinos de los Estados Unidos. La competencia ha posibilitado la producción de 13 obras teatrales profesionales en Repertorio Español. Además, muchos de los finalistas han recibido lecturas dramatizadas y producciones en otros teatros de la nación. Varios de ellos también se han convertido en artistas residentes de teatros tales como The Public Theatre en Nueva York y el Goodman Theatre en Chicago. Estos dramaturgos también han ganado premios ACE y HOLA (Lina Gallegos, Carlos Lacámara y Jorge González) y Quiara Alegría Hudes recientemente recibió el Premio Pulitzer de Drama. La competencia ha distribuído más de $100,000 en premios a artistas latinos desde sus comienzos.

BARCELÓ CON HIELO (Barceló on the Rocks) by Dominican-American playwright Marco Antonio Rodríguez took first place. The playwright will receive a cash award of $3,000 and the play will receive a full production at Repertorio in 2014.
Now on its 14th edition, MetLife Nuestras Voces has brought awareness to dozens of Latino plays and playwrights throughout the nation. The competition is responsible for the production of 13 plays at Repertorio Español. In addition, many of the competition’s finalists have gone on to receive readings, workshops and full productions at theaters such as Second Stage, Teatro Vista in Chicago and Signature Theatre in Virginia. Playwrights have subsequently received fellowships and residencies at companies such as The Public Theatre in New York and Goodman Theatre in Chicago, respectively. Playwrights that have participated in the competition have won ACE and HOLA Awards (Lina Gallegos, Carlos Lacámara, and Jorge González) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (Quiara Alegría Hudes). The competition has distributed $100,000 in cash awards to Latino playwrights.

ACE award for best director/drama, both for La Luz De Un Cigarrillo (The Light
Of A Cigarette), Marco Antonio Rodriguez's new play, Barcelo On Ice, is a
finalist in Spanish Repertory's Nuestras Voices playwriting competition and
will receive a free public reading (in Spanish) on Monday, November 19, 6:30
pm. Barcelo On Ice competed with over 75 other works and was selected as one of
only nine finalists!
Drama / Comedy: After receiving an unexpected medical diagnosis, Nino Antonio Cruz, a Dominican cibaeño residing in New York with his two sons, is forced to confront his mortality in a whirlwind of memories, secrets and ghosts connected to the first years of the regime of Dr. Joaquin Balaguer in the Dominican Republic. The surprising revelations that come to light shake the already unstable family base and forces Nino to confront the demons that have slowly been destroying his body, soul and family.
The public reading of Barcelo On Ice will be directed by award winning director, Jose Zayas. The cast includes Fermin Suarez, Villilo Stewart, Juan Carlos Diaz, Fernando Then and Modesto Lacen.
Reading: Monday, November 19th, 6:30pm. In Spanish!

Las sorprendentes revelaciones que salen a la luz sacudirán la ya inestable base familiar y obligara a Nino a enfrentar los demonios que poco a poco han ido destruyendo en cuerpo y alma a el y a su familia .
La lectura pública de Barceló Con Hielo será dirigida por el galardonado director, José Zayas. El reparto incluye Fermín Suárez, Stewart Villilo, Juan Carlos Díaz, Fernando Then y Modesto Lacen.

Since then ACE has conducted 43 annual award galas, without interruption.
